Introducing our Patron: Saint Joseph of Cupertino
Feast Day: September 18th
Joseph of Cupertino is the most famous of levitating saints. Born in 1603, Joseph was humble, pious, absent-minded, and had a fiery temper. After many difficulties, he entered the Franciscan order. When facing his examination for ordination, he was providentially asked the question which he knew best how to answer, and thus is invoked as the patron of students. Joseph was also known for his example of prayer and penance and for levitating during deep contemplation. Rumors of his habit of flying during prayer became so pervasive that Joseph had to be transferred several times to avoid unwanted attention!
JCCA’s Mascot: The Flying Saints
There were some saints that were so immersed in prayer that their feet literally left the ground. While amazing, this is by no means unique, as many saints are reputed to have this gift.
